Card sort studies provide insight into how users think about content, content labels and navigational hierarchies. Users group together website or application content written on cards in ways that seem natural and logical to them. A moderator may ask them to elaborate on their grouping strategies. Card sorting may be done in person or remotely via web-based tools if a large sample is desired.
